Mayor Wolcott proclaims August Drowning Impact Awareness Month

Surprise Mayor Sharon Wolcott stressed the importance of drowning prevention education as she proclaimed August to be Drowning Impact Awareness Month at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting.

“Arizona has already seen more than 20 fatalities as a result of water-related incidents this year,” said Wolcott, “and with August being a hectic time of year, we want to do our part to remind the community to be extra vigilant.”

Drowning Impact Awareness Month is a collaborative statewide effort led by Phoenix Children’s Hospital to encourage safety around water and promote awareness. The effort focuses on purple ribbons to remember those touched by child drowning.

“Drownings are preventable,” said Mayor Wolcott. “Let’s join our Fire-Medical Department and other advocates across the state in working to raise awareness and share information on how to prevent these tragedies.”

The Surprise Fire-Medical Department offers Community Life Safety Education that includes Water Safety Day, free CPR training, swim lesson assessments and water safety tips. Check the calendar at surpriseaz.gov for upcoming events and visit the Fire-Medical page for resources on water safety.
